Description

In 1807, a monumental camp meeting was held at Mow Cop, a remote village in Staffordshire, England. When Camp Meeting Methodists led by Hugh Bourne and Clowesites led by William Clowes joined together four years later, a new religious movement was born: Primitive Methodism. While the Wesleyan Connexion disapproved of camp meetings, Primitive Methodists were enthusiastic supporters of the movement, holding camp meetings on both sides of the Atlantic throughout the early nineteenth century. Published in 1919, "History of the Primitive Methodist Church" includes an overview of the earliest days of the movement, with accounts of Hugh Bourne and William Clowes as well as chronicles of early English camp meetings.
